  • Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to language development. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success.

  • The nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading aloud encourages children to form a positive association with books and reading later in life.

  • Reading aloud gives children the opportunity to practice listening - a crucial skill for kindergarten and beyond.

  • Research shows that the more words parents use when speaking to an 8-month-old infant, the greater the size of their child's vocabulary at age 3.

  • Once children start school, difficulty with reading contributes to school failure, which can increase the risk of absenteeism, leaving school, juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy - all of which can perpetuate the cycles of poverty and dependency.

  • Incorporate math at home through cooking, counting money, purchasing items at a store, making a budget for grocery shopping, driving in a car and calculating distance, building and measuring, etc.

  • Practice math facts daily at home.

  • Math facts fluency leads to higher order mathematics.   Through automaticity students free up their working memory and can devote it to problem solving and learning new concepts and skills (Geary, 1994).  Quite simply, a lack of fluency in basic math facts recall significantly hinders a child’s subsequent progress with problem-solving, algebra and higher-order math concept.

  • Math can be compared to languages in some ways.  Just like you have to learn to combine letters into words and words into sentences – and we have strategies like phonics and sight words to help kids to learn to read - math facts are the foundation blocks for learning the next level of math.
